Tehani Guruge and Anura Hewage win squash titles

Tehani Guruge clinched a double at the Sixth Amaya Hills Open Squash Championship that was successfully concluded at the hotel complex at Herassagala, Kandy on October 14 and 15.

She won the women’s Open Championship and the girls’ under 19 events and was the star of the tournament.

In the Women’s Open event final Sri Lanka’s number two Tehani Guruge, beat Vidushi Gurunada, Sri Lanka’s number three seeded player, in an easy straight sets win; 9/5, 9/5, 9/4.

Later in the girls’ under 19 final; Tehani Guruge beat her younger cousin Shariya Guruge easily in straight sets 9/7, 9/6, 9/7.

Eleven year old R Laksiri from D S Senanayake Vidyalaya, dominated the boys under 13 and 11 events beating his opponents very comfortably.

The Men’s Open event was won by Sri Lanka’s number three player in Anura Hewage of Trans Asia who got the better of Kavinda Cooray of the Sinhalese Sports Club in straight sets, 9/5, 9/4, 9/5.

Colonel Rohan Anthonisz, President of the Sri Lanka Squash Federation, who graced the occasion, speaking a few words at the closing ceremony, thanked Denesh de Silva, Director, Sales and Marketing of Amaya Resorts and Spa’s for having organized a much looked forward to tournament after a lapse of two years in the outstation, the first during this calendar year.

He also thanked the Amaya Hills Hotel for the very sincere support that they had rendered to the Sri Lanka Squash Federation to promote and popularize the game of squash in the outstations and profusely thanked the Hotel Management for the kind hospitality and for the excellent arrangements made by the hotel to host this prestigious tournament in the hill capital of Sri Lanka.

Hameem Farook, Manager, Sales and Marketing of Amaya Resorts and Spa’s, was the chief guest and gave away the prizes.

Men’s Over 35 event, veterans: Janaka Suwaris w/o Sqn Ldr Jaliya Jayasekera.

Men’s Over 45 event: Col Tissa Jayasooriya beat Oliver Guruge 9/5, 6/9, 9/1, 9/3.

Boys under 19: Chakranga Rajapaksha beat Gihan Suwaris 9/2, 9/1, 8/10, 9/5.

Boys under 17: Kasun Weerasuriya beat Binura Jayasooriya 9/3, 9/7, 10/9.

Girls under 17: Damindi Udangawa beat I de Silva 9/3, 9/4, 9/5.

Boys under 15: Gihan Suwaris beat Binura Jayasooriya; 7/9, 6/9, 9/3, 9/2, 9/7

Girls under 15: Shariya Guruge beat Nadindi Udangawa 9/4, 8/10, 1/9, 9/3, 9/2.

Boys under 13: R Laksiri beat Yasun Weerasuriya 7/9, 9/5, 10/8, 9/3.

Girls under 13: Eranga Gangaboda beat Gayara Jayasooriya 8/10, 9/7, 9/5, 9/5.

Boys under 11: R Laksiri beat U Hewage 9/1, 9/1, 9/1.

Girls under 11: S Methsarani beat L Kulatunge 8/10, 9/7, 9/2, 10/8.

Boys under 9: Harin Weerasuriya beat T U Jayasekera 7/9, 9/7, 9/5, 9/3. -
